img JibJab is “the Greatest GIF messaging app ever,” according to Gizmodo. PandoDaily illustrated it as a “chock full of... gems.” And the users agree that the JibJab app created by Softermii is a massive hit that has been downloaded over 11000 times and got 5 starts from over 6000 users.

the company

JibJab is a digital media company with a goal to make funny pictures, GIFs and videos worth sharing online. The company is a true pioneer of online entertainment production and distribution since 1999. Now, the company also has an advanced mobile app developed by Softermii that lets users add their photos to the funniest Internet’s gifs. As stated in the company’s profile, JibJab works only with the best developers, designers, technologists and business people to produce world-class original entertainment on the Internet.

The Challenge

Re-create JibJab’s functionality and intuitive design in the Mobile app. A key part of JibJab’s strategy is in the mobile realm as consumers spend increasingly more time in their favorite mobile apps and JibJab needed to become one of them. The challenge was in enabling users to seamlessly create funny content on their smartphones and share it with their friends and family.

JibJab already had a great mobile website for its users, but the initial app was poorly designed and had a number of serious usability bugs. Converting using from web to mobile was JibJab’s primary goal and to achieve high mobile app downloads and good retention rates for iOS and Android, they required professional software development services that Softermii could offer.

We came to JibJab with an aim to refresh its mobile system, while preserving complete access to all features and offering a cleaner and updated look that is resilient in the future.

“Softermii made it incredibly easy to use the app and create fun pics. I love how you can choose between various GIFs and eCards while preserving great usability and speed of the web version.”

The last big chunk of work we had to do was in rewriting the renderer, because in the current implementation there was a problem of video and mask mismatch. The work was practically completed and successful. Initially, it was not possible to obtain the value of the frame rate of the video from the video file adequately on all types of devices. Therefore, we switched to the FFmpeg library to obtain metadata, and establish a clear-cut synch of the frame rate. Then there was a series of tasks to update the mechanism for caching JibJab masks. We replaced Picasso library to load images with Glide, as the latter one led to memory leaks.

The Solution

JibJab initially used only its website to provide fun ways to interact with your friends. But that changed and more and more users embracing their smartphones, it became evident that a great mobile app will open new options for them compared to a mere web version. So we worked hard with the company’s team to offer their customers the real JibJab experience on mobile. By updating their product, we were able to push the company’s public image and the app was written about in USA Today and TechCruch. The more important thing is that the app has an average 4.5-star rating on App Store and Play Market with 3500+ reviews on each.

Not many remember that JibJab is the first company that created a viral video. We were privileged to work with them and help them create a new design for their mobile app that redefined JibJab mobile product. So it was also important to add new UI elements to the main screen such as quick selection of the current mask. The main challenge was to implement the shadow for the heterogeneous dynamic image, since with the use of shadows on the Android platform is poor. The initial app on Android was having multiple usability issues and crashed a lot. We worked on fixing those bugs based on reports from Crashlytics.

They literally changed the mobile look of JibJab.”

The Results

By redesigned a native app and redeveloping its core functionality we strived to boost the core brand experience. As the company’s mission is that “users should experience the JibJab brand daily, not just every year on a birthday or holiday,” we made sure that the new app becomes handy and simple to use.

To bring JibJab users a pioneering and premium content we added the following features to the app:

  • - Easily connect the app with all major social media or email
  • - Instant selfie snap to use in funny GIFs and videos
  • - Straightforward access to the pictures of your friend’s faces to easily create animation
  • - Provide proper levels of synchronization when creating new animations
  • - One-click sharing of JibJab app with friends to install on their mobile devices, and more.
